This is the third post in a series inspired by a Forbes Magazine article that listed a number of questions you should ask a financial advisor.
How do I know I can trust my financial advisor?
For over 32 years Scott Sampson has held the Certified Financial Planner (CFP®credential which is the best known and most highly respected standard for financial advisors. It generally takes two years to complete the coursework for this program with final exams following each of the required courses.
At the end of the program, CFP® candidates must then take and pass a comprehensive final exam covering all of the coursework presented over that two year period. As a CFP® registrant, an advisor must abide by the Code of Ethics and approved standards of conduct approved by the CFP® Board.
While it is not required to hold the CFP® designation to provide financial planning and investment advisory services, it ensures that the advisor is trained and competent to provide all of the critical elements that should be considered when evaluating and planning for a client’s financial future.
Scott Sampson is also a member of the East Bay Chapter of The Financial Planning Association (FPA). The FPA offers ongoing opportunities for continuing education and association with other financial professionals. This helps member professionals keep on top of industry trends. It also offers monthly meetings so financial professionals can meet and discuss issues that help them better serve their clients.
Finally, Scott Sampson also holds a life and disability license from the State of California that allows him to bring appropriate insurance products to the table for the clients of Sampson Investment Management.
But there is more to it than licensing and credentials. You also want to trust your instinct and be able to have a relationship with your financial advisor. It’s important to feel a connection with the people of the firm who are helping you realize your long-term dreams.
